Familiar words can become strangely unfamiliar just before you speak. First you check the tense, then search for a preposition. By the time the sentence is ready, the conversation has moved on.
Make today's goal smaller: order one drink and repeat yourself if necessary. AI conversation offers chances to restart a scene and continue after a pause. Its usefulness still depends on what you can do next time without the script.
Check which conversation feature you have
Duolingo describes Video Call as a conversation with its AI character Lily. Its official introduction says eligible learners can enter through a course path or practice area and ask for slower speech or repetition. Courses, accounts, and devices must be checked in the app. Official Video Call introduction
If you have access, find somewhere quiet and start a short exchange. Before opening a translator and preparing a long answer, listen for one question and try to answer one thing.
The exercise can also be used with other voice-enabled tools, but their correction, records, and course designs differ. One product's features do not describe all apps.
Prepare just three sentences
These independently written practice lines cover buying a drink:
“I'd like a small coffee, please.”
“Could you say that again, more slowly?”
“Let me try that again.”
One begins the exchange. One keeps it going when you miss something. One gives you room to restart. You do not need ten polite alternatives yet; make these available when needed.
Write three keywords—small, coffee, takeaway—rather than copying a complete script. Reading a script can leave you stranded when the other speaker changes the question.
First round: get the meaning across
Make your request. If asked about size, answer size; add more when asked. Delivering every prepared detail at once is not necessarily closer to ordinary conversation.
Ask for repetition when needed. That is a successful conversational action. A guessed answer can become harder to sustain as further questions follow.
Duolingo's description emphasizes natural exchange rather than constant interruption for sentence-by-sentence grammar correction. An uncorrected sentence is not proof of correctness.
Watch two things this round: Did you communicate the request? Could you continue after misunderstanding?
Second round: repair one sticking point
Afterward, record one phrase that stopped you. Use a transcript if your account offers one. Otherwise write the meaning you remember attempting; do not invent a fluent version and call it what you said.
Perhaps you wanted takeaway but kept saying “outside.” Check a suitable expression, then try again. Regional usage differs. Accurate meaning and mutual understanding matter more than collecting synonyms.
Repair only this point in the second round. Note other errors for later. Thinking about pronunciation, tense, politeness, and vocabulary simultaneously can put you back into silence.
Third round: change a condition
Order a large drink instead of a small one, tea instead of coffee, or allow an unprepared question. Are you using understanding or replaying remembered sounds?
If you can only recite the same sequence, do not increase difficulty yet. Return to the meaning and rebuild shorter sentences. Fewer words can still complete an exchange; an uncontrolled long sentence can lose the essential detail.
You can then record a private ten-second account of what you ordered and what the other speaker asked, without the tool. Listen for whether pauses actually obstruct meaning before deciding what to practice.
Describe progress specifically
Record whether you could begin without first composing in Chinese, request repetition, and respond after a condition changed. This is a personal practice log, not a standardized language assessment.
AI may misunderstand accents or give unsuitable feedback. Check important expressions against reliable dictionaries, courses, or an appropriate teacher. One smooth call does not establish readiness for every real-world speed or accent.
This exercise follows public product information. It was not tested in your account and makes no promise of fluency within days.
When you stall next time, try: “Let me try that again.” Stay in the exchange long enough to finish the thought.
